FAQs

Your pension questions answered, here.

Can I cash out my pension when I resign?

Yes, but it's heavily taxed and reduces your long-term growth. Preservation is usually better.

How much can I take as cash at retirement?

Up to one-third as cash. The rest goes into a retirement annuity unless the value is below R247,500.

What happens during divorce?

The spouse can claim a 'pension interest' by court order. It can be paid out or transferred tax-free.

If both spouses work for government, what happens?

Each has separate GEPF benefits. The surviving spouse may get a spousal pension.

Can I move my GEPF pension to a private company?

Yes, via full transfer to an approved provider. GEPF doesn’t allow partial transfers.

Who gets my pension when I die?

In GEPF: spouse and minor children. In private funds: nominated beneficiaries.

Can I keep my employer's provider after I leave?

No. You must move to an approved new fund of your choice.

Can I withdraw part of my preservation fund?

Yes, once before 55. It is taxed but helpful in emergencies.

Life Annuity vs Living Annuity?

Life annuity: fixed income, no inheritance.
Living annuity: flexible, allows inheritance.

How often should I update my beneficiaries?

Every year or after major life changes (marriage, kids, death, divorce).
